There is a stigma that original chiptune compositions are too “game-y” — in other words, they are loud mashes of electronic beeps that often sound too similar to one another and aren’t sophisticated enough to be recognized by a wider audience. I don’t believe that’s true, and I’ve done my best to share artists and albums that challenge that notion.
Today, I present Yoann Turpin’sRhythm’n’Bits, a classy chiptune / live instrument album inspired by the SNES and Sega Genesis RPGs from his youth. It’s not meant to be in your face, rather it’s supposed to be mellow enough to nod your head along with at the end of a long day. At least, that’s my take on Yoann’s style of funk and RnB fusion. I did chuckle upon first hearing the track “Funky Bits” because I almost had it confused for Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious”!
You have several options if you’d like to purchaseRhythm’n’Bits. The least expensive wouldAmazon, where the 19-track album is $7.99. OniTunes, it’s $9.99. Finally,Bandcamphas it for €7.99 (about $10.24). Why they oddly different pricing schemes? Ummm… beats me!
