The ‘Nintendo in-print’ Holiday gift guide

‘Buy my book!’ ~ Jay Sherman While much of modern society has moved on to the world of “electrons and information“, there are two demographics that still eat up the printed page: kids and old people. Interestingly enough, these are also the two age groups who often love Nintendo the most. With kids, we can guess that Nintendo’s general rejection of most things edgy, gritty, and grumpy is a major selling point....

They Breathe is deceptively creepy, worth a look

They Breatheis disturbing in all the right ways. For starters, it’s got the fear of running out of breath, one gamers have had since the days ofSonic the Hedgehogor before. And then there’s the creatures. They look to me like horrifying jellyfish; the developers call them “strange aquatic mooses.” Whatever these things actually are, the way they squeeze the life out of frogs is not a particularly pleasant sight. A twist is being promised, with potentially “the coolest thing” aboutThey Breathebeing a story spoiler....

This musical parody of The Oregon Trail highlights the intersection of games and theater

My two favorite things! I really love musical theater. I was raised on original Broadway cast recordings of various shows likeLes Miserables,Little Shop of Horrors, andWicked, and my friends and I even had aPhantom of the Operafan club when I was in third grade. So as you may imagine, I was pretty jazzed when I discovered there was a musical adaptation of the 1971 educational gameThe Oregon Trail. The show is aptly namedTheTrail to Oregon!...

Tokyo Game Show 2012 beat last year’s attendance

What a week! Tokyo Game Show 2012 is over, and we have a rather uprisingamount of storiesto show for it, actually. I went in not expecting to see too much from the show, but there were quite a few Japan-only games that had us calling for worldwide releases. This year saw 223,753 visitors, compared to 2011’s 222,668. Not a huge boost, of course, but the fact that attendance didn’t decline is good — especially considering there was no next-gen hardware from Microsoft or Sony present....

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 is from a time when patches didn’t break wrestling games

1-P resuraaaaaa The current run of the WWE 2K are extremely frustrating. Each release seems to come with its own compromises and drawbacks.WWE 2K22has an upgraded engine, but the custom entrances have been taken out, and there’s no Rick Rude. To make matters worse, patches after its release borked major parts of it. It’s bad enough that the6.5 I awarded to itis too generous for the state it’s been reduced to....

They ask for outrageous things like resumes, past job experience, and your middle name....

Game is out June 17 for PS4 and Xbox One Legendary martial artist Bruce Lee will be a playable character inEA Sports UFCand with that knowledge, I can’t imagine why you’d choose to play as anyone else. Now, EA is taking the usual “pre-order the game for access” route but, thankfully, Lee is not restricted to customers who reserve the game — they’re just getting him quicker. Everyone else will need to clear the game on pro difficulty or higher, unlocking Lee for play in the Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight, and Lightweight divisions....

Edmund McMillen (co-creator ofGishandTriachnid) has announced that his newest game,Aether, has been released to the public. McMillen personifiesAetheras a “personal project” that explores the concept of escapism and a child’s desire to find someone whom he can relate to. Here’s what McMillen had to say about the title in his press release: It’s called Aether and it’s a simple experimental art game about childhood and escapism. Its a very honest and personal project I’ve been a little worried about making public because its exposes a lot of the fears I had when I was a child and puts me in a vulnerable places....
