Any debate over the best Classic seriesMega Mansoundtrack typically boils down toMM2andMM3. Both games sport some of the best music on the NES, but when push comes to shove,MM2will edge out ever so slightly in a popularity contest. Such a masterpiece deserves a high-quality album release; sadly, it still hasn’t received one.

A week back, Capcom uploaded theMega Man 1OSTto its online store, and now it has done the same forMega Man 2. These albums are ripped directly from theRockcan, a Japan-only physical collection of theMega Man 1-10soundtracks plus extras. Namely, the CDs for1-6contain both the original NES music as well as the arranged tunes heard in theComplete WorksPS1 re-releases and a few other arrangements by Capcom’s in-house band, Alph Lyla. Slowly but surely, these are being made available digitally for US fans.

I of course own theRockcanand can vouch for the quality ofalmosteverything in the tin. The big black mark — and boy, is it an ugly one — is that theMM2NES tracks were recorded improperly, introducing a whole mess of audio hiccups that sound absolutely dreadful.MM3and onward are pitch perfect, so what could have happened here? I would hate for any of you to spend $8.95 on this and be disappointed.

But theMM2 Complete Workssoundtrack is included, so there’s that at least.
