Get some popcorn & check these out!

Before the big ball drops tonight and we close out December and 2015, I must reveal the winners of this month’s Dtoid Designs contest. For December, I issued a challenge to see what kinds of wonderful levels you could make based off of a movie. The response was deafening…

Oh wait, I’m sorry I mean the response was silent as just seven people entered. While that kind of turnout might put a dour note on things, I’m happy to say the quality of this month’s entries did not disappoint and I couldn’t wait to tell you about the three levels selected as the best.

#3: Rolling Rock Runaway by Some Blonde GuyLevel ID: 4F11-0000-0108-FB05

At number three is an ode to one of the most famous moments in movie history: theRaiders of the Lost Arkboulder chase. Designer Some blonde Guy switched out the boulder with a giant saw blade, but kept the spirit of the scene intact.

Whether you’re hanging from vines or dodging bullets, you can see the passion Some blond guy has forIndiana Jonesin every detail of this level.

#2: Fear & Loathing in the Mushroom Kingdom by CTMikeLevel ID: 4E68-0000-0119-752A

In second place is a level based off a film that I admit I had not seen before I played the stage. On my first run-through I didn’t get it.

Sure, I knew the movie was about drugs but why was I always in a car? Then I watched the movie and suddenly it all clicked. Designer CTMike uses the effects selection inSuper Mario Makerto perfectly capture the drug-indused haze of the film. This level is just as trippy as the film, and just as fun.

#1: Showdown at the House of Blue Leaves by SupplanterLevel ID: E24C-0000-0116-EE48

The top spot this month goes to Disqus user Supplanter and their level Showdown at the House of Blue Leaves. This wonderfully designed stage takes the famous fight scene fromKill Bill Vol. 1and puts you right in the middle of it all. What I appreciated about Supplanter’s design was how closely it followed the movie.

You just didn’t fight against the Johnny Mo and the Crazy-88 before taking on O-ren Ishi, you had to complete every fight The Bride took part in. From the duel with Gogo to the silhouetted battle (complete with a timid goomba you can choose to kill or let live), you can tell a lot of love and a lot of repeated viewings of the movie went into making this.

I want to thank everybody who entered over the last three months, but I am sorry to say this will be the final Dtoid Designs contest to be featured on the main page. If you still want to test out your level creation skills I will continue the feature over in the C-Blogs, so look for January’s challenge tomorrow.
